Passive Transport • No energy needed to move material. • Random motion and concentration of molecules. The difference in the concentration of the substance is called the concentration gradient Movement of substances is from: “high concentrations to low concentrations” “Down the concentration gradient” because the material wants to be in equal amounts inside and outside of the cell.

Water Hypertonic solution Look at the water – there is more space for water inside the cell than inside the cell because of the solid. Therefore, the water moves out of the cell into the solution. Cell will Shrink!
Water Hypotonic solution Look at the water – there is more space for the water outside the cell than inside the cell because of the solid. Therefore, the water moves into the cell. Cell will swell!
Isotonic Solution There is an equal amount of water inside and outside of the cell. This means that there is an equal amount of water moving inside and outside. The cell will stay the same size!
