Summer Reading: A Way Into the Future. Those who read, are the ones who succeed.
The Problem • Summer reading… “Why? It’s dumb..” (No one wants to read over the summer or has interest or knows why they should) • “ I never like the books, they’re confusing…”(some or most students do not understand the books ) • “It’s not on MY LEVEL…I can’t relate” (books aren’t in OUR generations life and times)
Solution: Prevent the Summer Slide • Signing your kids up for the Summer Reading Program. • Getting your kids involved with Parks & Recreation, FCDC, Church groups, etc. • Let your kids see YOU read!!!

Why Public Library Summer Reading Programs are Important • Numerous studies have shown that reading over the summer prevents “summer reading loss.” • Some researchers estimate 50-67% of the achievement gap, for children living in poverty and for children of color, is the result of summer learning loss. • Summer reading loss is cumulative. Children don’t “catch up” in fall because the other children are moving ahead with their skills. By the end of 6th grade, children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates. Advantages of Summer Reading Programs for Students who Struggle with Reading • One advantage of public library summer library programs is that they are not located in school buildings, which helps reduce the negative perception about summer learning for students who are struggling. • Summer reading programs in public libraries usually encourage readers, especially those who are struggling, to use alternate formats such as magazines, recorded books, graphic novels, and material on the Internet. • Library summer programs offer extensive enrichment activities related to literature that is often not included in schools, because of the time constraints.
