LA HISTORIA El 25 de Noviembre de 1871 cuando los estudiantes de medicina se encontraban en su aula de la Universidad de la Habana, son arrestados bajo la acusación de haber profanado la lápida del periodista español Gonzálo Castañón. Al siguiente día el segundo cabo, General Crespo, ordena un juicio sumarísimo. En el juicio a los estudiantes, se le impusieron diferentes penas de cárcel, pero la turba de Federico Capdevila milicianos voluntarios, que se encontraba en la calle comenzó a vociferar pidiendo paredón. Se hizo un segundo juicio y se seleccionan a ocho estudiantes inocentes, que son defendidos enérgicamente, por el Capitán español Federico Capdevila [foto] pero, el 27 de Noviembre de 1871, caen abatidos a balasos frente al pelotón. Muchos años después, cuando se exhumaron los restos de Gonzálo Castañón, el hijo de este declaró públicamente que la tumba de su padre nunca fue profanada.
