  3. Today’s Objectives/Agenda AGENDA • Complete Spanish American War Reading and worksheet in groups • Panama Canal intro and Webquest! OBJECTIVES “I can explain how the building of the Panama canal exhibits Roosevelt’s policy of Big Stick diplomacy and the United State’s growth as a world power.”

Cuban Insurrections begin fighting against Spain • Cuba insurrections began on February 24, 1895 • Cuban fought using guerilla warfare to damage economic life in Cuba • Americans were willing to support the struggle because they felt sympathy for Cubans. • Americans feared unrest in Cuba because of US investments in the country for sugar and mining.

  5. 3 Main reasons the US becomes involved in Cuba’s struggle for independence • Outrage of imperialism by another country in Western Hemisphere • Yellow Journalism exaggerates the cruelty of the Spanish to gain American sympathy. i.e. “Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain” • USS Maine was blown up and the de Lome letter upset Americans

  6. The end of the war resulted in Spain turning its colonies over to the US, and the US emerging as a World Power • President McKinley and Congress signed a joint resolution to begin war. They declare Cuba independent and demand Spain leave Cuba. • Treaty of Paris between Spain and US gives Spanish colonies to the US including Puerto Rico, Guam and the Phillipines. • Cuba becomes a protectorate of the US
