Lipstick • Leaves of Brazilian Wax Palm Trees(Carnauba wax) • Ingredients: -Wax -Oil -Pigments & Dyes -Fragrance -Alcohol -Preservatives and Antioxidants
Natural History of Brazilian Wax Palm Trees • Appearance: tall, palm tree • Trees grow to an average of 25-35 feet but can reach up to 50 feet • Grows in South America, equatorial Africa but wax is only harvested in Brazil • Irregular rainy seasons in other areas inhibit the trees from producing wax • In hot months: leaves spread the wax to keep the moisture and protect from dehydration
History in Canada • Good alternative to beeswax • Comes in handy for people who choose to not use animal derived products. • Tree makes Carnauba wax which then produces daily use items such as dental floss & shoe polishes and cosmetics like lipstick, eyeliner, foundation and deodorant • Ingredient in many foods and household products
How Lipstick Is Made • Melting & Mixing: the raw ingredients for the lipstick are melted and mixed • Molding: lipstick is poured into a tube and is cooled • Labeling and Packaging: lipstick is labeled and packaged • Quality Control: lipstick must pass FDA Standards ( Food and Drug Administration)
Chemicals Involved • Chemical involved: mercury, lead, hydroquinone, antibacterial, and petroleum distillates found in lipstick, sodium laureth sulphate petrolatum • (Lead) its probably not a big deal having lead in lipstick
Waste Products • There is little to no waste in the manufacturing of lipstick • Product is reused whenever possible • The ingredients of lipstick are expensive they are hardly ever thrown out
Importance of Lipstick • Lipstick is the least expensive but are the most popular cosmetic in the world today • Costs as low as $4.00 to $50.00 • Comes in many different colours • Makes women feel attractive and beautiful • Society and the media lets women know that they don’t look pretty without lipstick • Media also makes women believe that women can’t survive without lipstick
