American Elm Planting Project Manistee National Forest Title text here 2010 Accomplishments The Northern Research Station started an American elm restoration project in 2003. Researchers screened elms for resistance or tolerance to Dutch elm disease, an introduced fungal pathogen that wiped out most American elm trees in the United States. Five trees were found with a suitable level of tolerance and have been cloned to produce trees for planting at various test sites. The Eastern Region purchased 84 Dutch elm disease-tolerant elms and distributed them to ten National Forests in 2010. The Princeton line, originating from a tree in a cemetery in Princeton, New Jersey, was selected for planting on the Manistee National Forest. The trees were planted at Chittenden, a historic tree nursery on the Cadillac-Manistee Ranger District. The fields that were used for tree seedling production until the 1970s are currently being converted to native grass and wildflower production fields. The seed will eventually be used for restoration efforts on the Forest. Hopefully the elm trees will also produce seed that will be used for restoration efforts. Five 1 -gallon container stock trees were received and planted in May. Northeastern Area elm researchers and the Chequamegon-Nicolet Interpretive Services Specialist aided in the development of an interpretive sign that shares the story of the devastation caused by Dutch elm disease and the hopeful return of American elms to National Forests in the Eastern Region locations. Figure 1. An interpretive sign that shares the story of hope and return for the American elm will be posted in 2011 to compliment the elms planted in 2010. Year Awarded: 2010 (funds were awarded to Region 9 for this multi-forest project) Project completion: 2010 for planting; 2011 for sign installation Report number: 1 of 1 Expenditures: $582.50 $162.50 for American elm saplings $420 for share of regional project coordination, sign design, etc. Partners/Contractors/Cooperators: Regional Office; Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest; Northern Research Station; Botany Shop Garden Center (MO); Genesis Graphics (MI).
