Chatham County and School Policy The dress and personal appearance of students greatly affect their academic performance and their interaction with other students. Students dress must be conducive to learning. The Chatham County Schools Code of Conduct prohibits any appearance or clothing that does the following: 1. Violates a reasonable dress code adopted and publicized by the school; 2. Is substantially disruptive; 3. Is provocative or obscene; or 4. Endangers the health or safety of the student or others.
Prohibited Items for Tops (Blouses, Sweaters, etc.)Shirts must be worn at all times. • Sexually explicit or suggestive (no cleavage) • Promotes illegal substances and/or alcohol • Contains profanity or vulgar language • Contains gang-related signs or colors or racial slogans including the Confederate flag • Exposes midriff stomach area and/or lower back • Exposes undergarments • Shirt straps less than three fingers wide • Shirts with lace that expose undergarments, stomach, back or cleavage
Prohibited Items for Bottoms (Pants, Shorts, Skirts/Dresses) • When in a standing position, bottoms MUST reach beyond the fingertips • Contains gang-related signs or colors or racial slogans including the Confederate flag • Contains words or lettering across the buttocks area of the pants/skirts/shorts • Pajamas and/or bedtime attire • Sagging pants or exposing undergarments will not be tolerated • Spandex, leggings, yoga pants, workout attire This should ONLY be worn in the gym and/or dance rooms if applicable.
Prohibited Items for Shoes/Accessories • Bedroom slippers • Hats (including, but not limited to ball caps, wave caps, toboggans, bandannas and stocking caps) • Coat or sweatshirt hoods • Sunglasses and sweatbands • Chains worn around the neck or on clothing must be appropriate length. This rule also applies to heavy gauge chains.
Additional Information • Individual schools are free to specify additional examples of dress or appearance that are prohibited at that school under the terms of this policy. (as per Chatham County Schools Handbook)
