  1. ANGLICAN HEALTH NETWORK MICRO- HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM EXPERIENCE OF CHURCH BASED PILOT PROGRAM IN THE DIOCESE OF DAR ES SALAAM

  2. 1.0 ANGLICAN HEALTH NETWORK • AHN is an Anglican network aiming at facilitating communication and cooperation between Anglicans who are working in the health sector. • Objective : To create support of specific programs to improve healthcare in the developing world. • AHN started in May 2009. • Head Office is in Geneva.

  3. 2.0 AHN PROGRAMS • Micro Health Insurance - India and Diocese of Dar • Supply of Hospital Equipment. • Organize Volunteer services to Anglican Hospital.

  4. 3.0 MHI PILOT IN THE DIOCESE OF DAR ES SALAAM. The pilot started September 2009. Introductory meeting with Clergy. Research and Product Development. Employment of Staff. Training. Official launch was October 2010. Program was closed in August 2011.

  5. 3.1 THE PACKAGE The Insurance was set to target very common conditions at a very affordable cost. Malaria, Acute Respiratory Diseases, Diarrhea Diseases, Pneumonia, Antenatal & Postnatal Care (Maternity).

  6. 3.2 THE PACKAGE continues… The premium was TZS 60,000 ( USD 40) per annum. The package covers a family of up to 5 people. The package was further improved to accept payment for 6 months cover for TZS 30,000/= ( USD 20).

  9. 5.0 RESULTS • In the period of one year we managed to achieve only 10% of the target policies. • The claim paid was 3 times the total collections made.

  10. 6.0 CHALLENGES • Insurance has a bad background in TZ. • Health Insurance; new terminology. • Many priorities in the church. • Unfaithful customers/service providers.

  11. 7.0 CONCLUSION • Has Micro Health Insurance service failed ? • Can church be a vehicle for MHI distribution ? • Does a product need to be improved ?
