BELLWORK: September 16th • Read about Buddhism and answer the following: • In one sentence, summarize how Buddhism began. • What is nirvana? • How do Buddhists use meditation? • What is a philosophy? How is this different than religion? • List two similarities between Buddhism and Hinduism. • THINKER: Review the Three Universal Truths, Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path – which ONE idea stands out to you the most? Why?

  4. It is believed that after 49 days of fasting and meditation, Siddhartha achieved an understanding of the causes of suffering and became the Buddha or “Enlightened One.”

  14. Bellwork: Block 1Confucianism & Daoism: (pages 130-132) • Who was Confucius? What was he concerned about? How did he try to solve these problems? • Under Confucianism, there are two elements one must follow – duty & humanity. Explain each one of these elements! What do they mean in society? • How is Daoism similar to Confucianism? How are they different? • What is the primary belief of Daoism? • Explain the concept of yin and yang.

Confucianism • Towards end of Zhou dynasty, gov. lost control, civil wars, lost values = DISORDER! • Confucius aimed to restore order by promoting two ideas – duty & humanity. • Social Order had to be maintained • Everyone had duties/responsibilities they must follow • Analects • Teachings of Confucius = 5 million followers!

Tao= the way or path Taoism • Lao Tzu studied with Confucius and also wanted to focus on self-improvement, but not social order/roles or politics • Argued a natural force unites all things and all humans should strive to live in harmony with nature • Do things the natural way, don’t waste time, live simply, reflect, don’t impose rules = everyone should find their own path • Yin & Yang: world is filled with opposing forces that must be in harmony with one another

  19. Partner Discussion • With a partner, review the following: • What is the main idea of Confucianism? • What is the main idea of Daoism? • How are the two philosophies similar and different?

Chinese Philosophies Analysis • To learn more about the three main Chinese philosophies, you are going to analyze a quote important to the teachings of each. • Each person will start with a quote: • Confucius (Confucianism) • Lao Tzu (Daoism) • Siddhartha/Buddha (Buddhism) • It is up to you to analyze the meaning of this quote! Also consider it’s importance to you personally, as well as, at the time. • You will then switch with a partner (twice) to analyze one quote from each philosophy. • Take this seriously! Use this as a time to reflect on these teachings and how they can apply to modern society.
