Background and objectives of Exportinitiative Status quo • Exportinitiative coordinated and financed by Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) since 2002 • support of German RE enterprises (esp. SME) to enter new markets • instruments: market analyses, information events, business trips, trade fairs, marketing activities, Solar-roof-program • So far focus mainly on „easy markets“ (EU and OECD)

Background and objectives of Exportinitiative The way ahead • Request by German parliament to include developing countries • political imperative to make use of synergies between development cooperation and export promotion • pilot in Senegal (successfully implemented by GTZ in 2007) • programs in East-Africa and West-Africa (forthcoming) • Growing potential for and interest of German RE companies

Interest and role of GTZ • promote business partnerships between German and local RE private sector • facilitate technology transfer, strengthen local capacities and foster investment • support the establishment of conducive RE policies • integrate the use of sustainable energy technology in local development strategies

Approach and overview of activities Focal region: East-Africa • lack of information on market potentials and relevant actors • unsatisfactory legal and regulative framework • still relatively small markets • high transaction costs for foreign enterprises • limited number of qualified local partners

Module 1: Provision of information and matchmaking Market analysis • market analysis of focal region with tailor-made information on energy sector, business and investment conditions, RE potentials, barriers, relevant stakeholders, contact data, etc. • country-specific and thematic fact sheets on financing opportunities and instruments, credit lines, etc.
