  3. What is a utopia/ dystopia? Utopia: An imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. The word was first used in the book Utopia (1516) by Sir Thomas More. Dystopia: An imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one.

Elements of dystopias in literature • Thesociety/social structure plays an enormous role in the story • Strong elements of control, and lack of certain freedoms • Restricted information. • Citizens/characters are dehumanized to some extent • Conformity. Individuality and dissension are bad/immoral/illegal • There is the illusion of a perfect world
