Personal Profile Joseph Lister was born on the 5th of April 1827 in Upton, Essex and died on the10th of February 1912 in Walmer, Kent. Interests : Medicine
Joseph Lister’s Work At Quaker schools, he became a fluent reader of French and German, which were also the leading languages of medical research. In his teenage years, Lister attended Grove House School Tottenham, studying mathematics, natural science, and languages. He attended the University of London, one of only a few institutions which were open to Quakers at that time. He initially studied the Arts but graduated with honours as Bachelor of Medicine and entered the Royal College of Surgeons at the age of 26. Lister moved from Scotland to King's College Hospital, in London. In 1881 he was elected President of the Clinical Society of London. He also developed a method of repairing kneecaps with metal wire and improved the technique of mastectomy.
Other Facts The product Listerine is named after him. Joseph Lister was the son of Joseph Jackson Lister, a Fellow of the Royal Society and inventor of the achromatic doublet lens. Joseph Lister is the surgeon who introduced new principles of cleanliness which transformed surgical practice in the late 1800s.
