  2. It’s not just that we travel, it’s the waywe travel and connect with abroad communities. It’s the before and after just as much as the during.

  3. Where our trips come from. Relationships between our teachers and abroad communities. • Pre-work is so important: • Develop your cultural competencies • “Cultural competence is the will and ability to form authentic relationships across difference.” Gary Howard

  4. Global Competencies • Communication and Collaboration -- Working with people across national, linguistic, ethnic, religious borders. Peer to peer, local and international • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving – Cultural dissonance and rigor • Creativity and Innovation – The ultimate goal, working to solve global issues

  5. Students, you are ambassadors... You are representing: Catlin Gabel School Oregon United States American Culture… …whether you like it or not.

Stereotypes about americans... – outgoing, friendly – informal – cold – loud, rude, boastful, immature – hard working – extravagant, wasteful – lacking in class consciousness – disrespectful of authority – racially prejudiced – ignorant of other countries– generous– always in a hurry – confident – they have all the answers

  7. Safety and Communication • We can’t prepare for every scenario. We mitigate what we can. • We track safety in country. Cancel a trip? • Emergency preparedness • Registered with State Department and ACE • Trained in CPR/First Aid. In some cases, Wilderness First Aid • Trip leaders – medical kits, passport photocopy, emergency #’s, in some cases cell phones. • Students carry emergency phone #’s • Emergency contacts – Spencer White, Barbara Ostos– First point of contact. Coordinates between trip group, emergency agencies and families. • Communication: Building independence and self-resilience by not communicating. • E-mail updates.

  8. Health • Primary care or travel clinic – With itinerary • We’ve got a discount with St. Vincent’s Travel Clinic $70 • Extra prescriptions with trip leader – Medication/Eye glasses • Home-sickness (Most common result of homesickness… increased Self-confidence)

  9. Behavior Contract • For the safety of the group… • We cannot give rules for every scenario • Drugs and Alcohol • Rules of Catlin Gabel supercede norms of the country • Ambassador • In the off-chance student is sent home…

  10. Forms Insurance • Affidavit for Travel (Notarized: both Guardians) • Emergency Medical Information Form • Behavior contract • Liability Waiver • Passport photocopies Family Coverage ACE – Emergency assistance Optional Insurance – Trip Interruption Insurance, cancel for any reason
