Medical abortion is the use of pills to cause a miscarriage; it has high efficacy (92–99%) and an excellent safetyrecord Medical abortion can be used from the time a woman first misses her period up through the 2nd trimester of pregnancy Its potential as a very early abortion method (almost 100% effective) remains to be recognised and developed What is medical abortion?

  3. Medical abortion is safer and more effective now than 10 –15 years ago: Misoprostol causes fewer complications than previous prostaglandins Optimum regimens, including for misoprostol alone(based on evidence) Much more experience with the method Medical abortion has improved

  4. More countries approvingmedical abortion (>40). More womenchoosing it and more providers offering it National laws/regulations have begun incorporating specifics of medical abortion Additional indications being approved – e.g. prevention and treatment of post partum haemorrhage – making drugs more accessible Medical and surgical methodsare being combinedin various (creative) ways. Use / availability expanding

When ICMA began in 2002, few peopleknew about medical abortion Today, many international, regional, national and local stakeholders involved in advocacy, providing information, and providing medical abortion pills through many outlets Manymore drug companies, many new brands, and now the two drugs are being packaged together More global stakeholders

  6. ICMA was initiated in 2002. SC members are people with high expertise in abortion. Many of the first steering committee are still part of the organization In 2003, Reproductive Health Matters took responsibility for ICMA In 2005, Reproductive Health Training Centre in Moldova, took over coordination of ICMA History

Advocate for medical abortion in the context of safe abortion worldwide Advocate for the incorporation of medical abortion into public health systems and innovative mechanisms to make medical abortion available, accessible and affordable Advocate for laws, policies and regulations which make the provision of safe abortion possible Mission and objectives

ICMA is a consortium and a network It has a diverse and multidisciplinary global membership of individuals, national and international organisations, activists and advocates working together with medical professionals, researchers and policymakers Its members and affiliated networks are all autonomous Who we are

  9. Four affiliated regional networks: 1. Asian Safe Abortion Partnership (ASAP: www.asap-asia.org); 2.Eastern European Alliance for Reproductive Choice (EEARC:www.reprochoice.org); 3. African Network on Medical Abortion (ANMA: www.anma-africa.org); 4. Latin American Consortium Against Unsafe Abortion (CLACAI: www.clacai.org)

Convene strategic meetings of key stakeholders to discuss specific policy and strategy issues develop position papers on key controversial issues Organize a meeting in collaboration with WoW “Communication to improve women’ accessto information on safe abortion through hotlines and other new communication strategies”, Thailand, November 2011 …activities...

Support the development of links between the four regional networks to share strategies for advocacy and information work Organize capacity building workshops on organizational development, fundraising, and advocacy for expanded access to medical abortion, and the sharing of best practices and experience Work with the regional networks

  16. Support the participation of regional network members in national meetings in their own countries with a broad cross section of stakeholders, where national action strategies and agendas can be developed …regional networks…
