  11. Common Expectorants • Mucinex • Robitussin • Q-Bid • Scot-Tussin • Benylin E • Active Ingredient → Guaifenesin

  12. Guaifenesin • Increases volume and reduces viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi • Stimulates flow of respiratory tract secretions to allow ciliary movement to carry loosened secretions upward toward pharynx • Increases efficiency of cough reflex

  13. Side Effects • Nausea or vomiting • Stomach Irritation • Allergic reactions -Rash, itching/swelling, dizziness

  15. Pharmaceutical Issue West Nile Virus

  16. West Nile Virus • West Nile virus (WNV), a member of the Flaviviridae family • Most commonly found in West Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East • An RNA virus that infects the central nervous system (CNS) of various hosts, causing severe neurologic diseases • First documented occurrence in the western Hemisphere, during an outbreak of encephalitis in Queens, New York, in the late summer of 1999

  17. Epidemiology • Transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Culex mosquitoes • Mosquitoes become infected after feeding on vertebrate amplifying hosts, most commonly birds • Human-to-human transmission of WNV does not generally occur; humans, horses, and most other mammals do not develop high-level viremia. • But it is possible- FDA approved and implemented WNV nucleic acid amplification tests to screen donor blood and prevent the spread of WNV via blood products

  18. Symptoms • Most cases are usually asymptomatic • Usual presentation of WNV is fever of sudden onset, headache, back pain, malaise, eye pain, anorexia, and maculopapular rash • The typical incubation period for WNV is 2 to 14 days

  19. Treatment • Anti-viral agents: purine and pyrimidine analogues, interferon (INF)-alpha, and human immunoglobulin • Data suggest that high concentrations of ribavirin can inhibit replication and cytopathogenicity of WNV in vitro • Its clinical efficacy is limited due to lack of controlled trials, effectiveness crossing the blood-brain barrier, and the challenge of identifying WNV early enough to improve outcomes • PREVENTION!!

  20. Discussion • What is the pharmacist’s role in disease prevention?

  21. Pharmacist’s Role • Pharmacists are in an ideal position to provide education to patients about WNV and its prevention. • They are also able to assist patients in the selection and effective use of the most appropriate insect repellant

  28. Sample Interview Questions Tell me about yourself Why do you want to be a pharmacist? What have you done to prepare for pharmacy school? Pharmacy school can be very stressful. How will you deal with this stress? If you saw a co-worker stealing or abusing drugs, how would you handle the situation? Describe what you are doing to improve two of your weaknesses. If you do not get into pharmacy school, what is your second career choice? What changes would you like to see made in the current healthcare delivery system? What qualities do you have that will help make you a good pharmacist? If you observed a fellow student cheating on a test, what would you do?

  29. Group Interview Prompt Time: 15 Minutes to compose your case Only content will be graded. Your group will present after the time is up. 1) The Surgeon General has invited you to help plan a way to improve prescription and non-prescription use in senior citizens. What are the elements, goals, and objectives of your plan, and how will you implement it? 2) As a pharmacist, how would you value diversity? Explain your reasoning and give examples.
