The After Party • Spartacus’ numbers grow quickly after his first major victory. • Rome sends a new praetor: PubliusVarinius • He has 2,000 men • He is defeated • A second praetor is sent to help: Cossinius • Spartacus and his men spy on Cossinius • While he is bathing, he is attacked and killed • Spartacus raids and plunders 2 Roman camps.

  4. A Division in Leadership Spartacus Crixus Celtic leader Wants to attack Rome head on Attack more towns and then attack Rome Wants plunder • Wants to avoid battle • Spend as much time as possible training and equipping his troops • Get out of Italy ASAP

  5. The Compromise • The two generals come to an agreement: • Raid the countryside but don’t fight Romans head on • Train troops • Find more shepherds to act as guides
