ITN objectives • Attract and train young people to become researchers • Promote researchers mobility across sectors, countries and disciplines • Equip researchers with a broad set of skills that will match both public and private sector needs • Improve career prospects of doctoral candidates (different sectors, transnationally) • Improve quality of doctoral training • Promote collaboration of academia and private sector in doctoral training

  9. ITN definitions (participants) Participants: full network partners, signatories to the grant agreement. Recruit researchers, provide research & transferable skills training, provide secondment opportunities and receive funding (“beneficiaries” or “level 1”) Associated Partners: do not recruit researchers, do not claim costs. Provide transferable skills training and/or secondment opportunities (“level 2”) Private Sector:comprise organisations, including SMEs, gaining the majority of their revenue (>50%) through competitive means with exposure to commercial markets. Eligible organisations: any legal entity (but different eligibility criteria for each implementation mode).

ITN definitions (researchers) Early Stage Researcher (ESR): at the time of recruitment, must be in the first 4 years of their research careers (full-time equivalent), and with no doctoral degree awarded yet Experienced Researcher (ER): at the time of recruitment, doctoral degree (or at least 4 years research experience), and less than 5 years of research experience Nationality: recruited researchers can be of any nationality. Mobility: at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.

Multi-partners ITNs (Multi-ITN) • At least 3 participants (any type) from 3 different MS/ACAbove this minimum, participation of OTC and IO is possible • Associated partners from any country / sector / discipline • Private sector participation: “highest possible level” • Network involved in a joint research training programme • Participants appoint researchers to carry out proposed work • ESR: appointment for 3-36 months (>80% of total) • ER: appointment for 3-24 months (<20% of total) • Secondments encouraged(up to 30% of recruitment period) • Max 500 researcher months • Max 40% budget to one country Note: 9 participants on average over 2007-2011

Innovative Doctoral Programmes (IDP) • 1 participant only (from MS/AC) typically a University or Research Centre offering doctoral programme • Associated partners from any country / sector / disciplinestrengthen the international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral aspects • Network involved in a joint research training programme • The single participant appoints researchers • Only ESR: appointment for 3-36 months • Mandatory enrolment in doctoral programme • Secondmentsencouraged(up to 30% of recruitment period) • Max 500 researcher months

European Industrial Doctorates (EID) • 2 participants: 1 academic + 1 private sector (2 different MS/AC) • Research institutes can be academic partner ifassociated with a University delivering the doctoral degree • Associated partners from any country / sector / discipline • Only ESR: appointment for 3-36 months • Mandatory enrolment in doctoral programme • At least 50% of time at private sector participant • Recruited by 1 or both participants • Joint supervision by both participants • Consortium agreement mandatory • Max 180 researcher months • 20 M€ earmarked for the EID panel

ITN financial regime * • Category 1: Monthly Living Allowance - €38,000 gross salary per ESR / year x country coefficient - €58,500 gross salary per ER / year x country coefficient • Category 2: Mobility Allowance - €1,000 – €700 (family or not) per researcher month x country coefficient • Category 3: Contribution to Training & Research Costs • - €1,800 per researcher month (Multi-ITN) • - €1,200 per researcher month (EID and IDP) • Category 4: Management Activities • - Maximum 10% of total EU contribution (i.e. 10% of C1+C2+C3+C4+C5) • Category 5: Overheads • - 10% of direct costs (i.e. 10% of C1+C2+C3+C4) per partner * Budget allocated to level 1 participants (recruit & employ fellows)

No associated partners in IAPP Industry/Enterprises: Private sector is understood to comprise organisations gaining the majority of their revenue (>50%) through competitive means with exposure to commercial markets Early Stage Researcher (ESR): For secondment only. At the time of secondment (or recruitment), doctoral degree (or at least 4 years research experience). Two salary categories based on experience: 4-10 and >10 years of research experience (full-time equivalent)

IAPP features (2) Compulsory Staff Secondment • Main IAPP focus (≥ 50% of total person-months) • Always inter-sector • Periods of 2-24 months – can be split stays • Up to 30% intra-national secondments • Also technical staff where justified Optional Recruitment of experienced researchers • Periods of 12-24 months • Justify relevance to project /recruiting organisation • Not a substitute for secondment (no recruitment inside the consortium) Other • Networking activities • Workshops & Conferences
