No Enlightenment here • Nicholas I and previous Tsars, ensured that the ideas of enlightenment would not spread to Russia. • Where other countries failed, the Russian autocracy was successful in crushing opposition through exile and execution. • Russia’s geographically large size, meant that it was difficult for ideas to spread, as peasants were isolated.
