Editing Quotes • Do not use a quote over 7-10 words. • Use … (ellipses) to shorten the quote. • If you are not beginning at the start of the sentence, NO ELLIPSES NEEDED. • If you are not ending at a punctuation mark in your quote, end your quote with… • If you are editing out the middle of a quote … make sure you have a space on each side of the ellipses.
Commas before Quotes? • Place a comma after your introductory tag and before your quote. According to Alex, “No one will ever graduate.” • If the introductory tag ends with THAT, no comma is needed. We are in need of a person that “has a sense of honor.”
Ending Punctuation & Citations • If you are ending your quote with a citation you must place the period after the citation. • Howard claimed, “Lou didn’t love me” (Dully 36). • If you are placing the citation material in the tag, you place the period inside the quote marks. • On page 36, Howard Dully claimed that “Lou didn’t love me.”
Plagiarism. • Do not do it. • Do not lift any 3 words from the original source. • Do not borrow another’s work or paper and place it as your own. • You do this and you will fail this.
Absolute Words • Be careful when using Absolute Words… • Always • Because of this… • They will make your opinion concrete or they can create issues with believability. • Think about alternatives. • This may have happened… • A possibility is….
Conclusion Extension • To really strengthen your conclusion you may want to provide a SOLUTION OR WHAT IF statement to the end of the piece. • What would have happened if Lou had accepted Howard’s behavior? • What would have happened if Dr. Freeman had not taken an interested in Howard beyond the surgery? • And so forth?
The Big Picture • What do you want this piece to do? • Show how two unethical individuals were left with a child’s fate and who practiced better ethics? • Show that although Dr. Freeman had a questionable background, he did go through a process and find concrete problems that could be addressed with his specialty? • Show that The Dully’s abandoned Howard and that Dr. Freeman was attempting to give Howard a place in society? • Show Dr. Freeman as a careless, unethical professional and Lou as a confused and stressed out step-mother?
The Format • You must present a piece of evidence • And then explain how it affected Howard and that person’s relationship. Have a topic sentence that introduced the problem/ situation. Have a concluding sentence that highlights the problem or highlights the potential.
If you were writing this for college… • You would be establishing, from the start, who was at fault for Howard Dully’s premature lobotomy. • Define lobotomy and establish that it is not appropriate for this age (physically or emotionally). • Review Lou and Dr. Freeman through their actions, history, interactions and claims. • Build a focused and in-depth paper that uses multiple sources and evidence beyond My Lobotomy.
