  3. The Sun King

  4. Louis XIV was only 5 feet 5 inches tall! (but the high heels helped!) He became King of France when he was only five years old! Did you Know????? His famous quote was, "C'etatc'estmoi." Translation: "I am the state."

  5. Louis XIV liked to be called the "Sun King" because, like the sun, he believed all power radiated from him. He even danced the lead in a ballet called, 'The Sun King.' • At one meal, Louis once ate: 4 plates of soup, a whole pheasant, a partridge in garlic sauce, two slices of ham, a salad, a plate of pastries, fruit, and hard-boiled eggs!! • Louis had nearly 500 cooks, waiters, and other servants to work on his meals.

  6. Every morning, when Louis was awakened, there were at least 100 of the most privileged nobles waiting, hoping to help him dress for the day. Only four of these were allowed the honor of handing Louis his slippers or holding his sleeves for him!

  7. He banned the French assembly (Estates General) from meeting. Louis XIV as King He controlled the taxes, the military, and all business. He took away rights of French Protestants. He fought costly wars to increase French power.

  8. Louis XIV left France in debt and with many enemies! His last years were sad. He regretted the suffering he had caused the French people by his rule. The people of France rejoiced when he died; They had had enough of the Sun King! Louis had lived so long that he outlived his son and two grandsons!

  9. What Am I? • It took 36,000 workers and 6,000 horses to build me. • I have 1,400 fountains. • I have 2,000 rooms. • My main building is 500 yards long. (That’s 5 football fields!!)

  10. Versailles

  11. Versailles was like a small city. The main building was over 500 yards long. The two wings were each 150 yards long. The palace had 2,000 rooms! There were over 15,000 acres of gardens and 1,400 fountains.

  12. It took so much water to run all of the fountains that it was only done on special occasions. When the King walked in the garden, servants turned on the fountains just before he reached them. If Versailles had been built in 1994, it would have cost $2 billion dollars!

  13. REFLECTION List examples that show Louis XIV was truly an absolute monarch. Include examples of his lifestyle and his rule of France.
