Dark Matter The Portion of the Universe You Have to Appreciate to “See” By Andre Bosman and Barbara Anderson
The Portion of the Universe You Have to Appreciate to “See” • What is Dark Matter? (Andre) • Why we think Dark Matter exists? (Andre) • How we can “see” Dark Matter? (Andre) • What is Dark Matter made up of? (Barbara) • Why is Dark Matter important? (Barbara) • Questions and Answers (Class/Barbara/Andre)
What is Dark Matter? • Invisible to us • Cannot be seen directly with telescopes • Does not emit or absorb light • Has no significant electromagnetic radiation
What is Dark Matter? • Has mass • Has gravitational pull • Framework that holds galaxies together • Like a Christmas tree • Lights are the galaxies • Tree is Dark Matter
Why we think Dark Matter exists? • Some galaxies not behaving according to Newton and Einstein laws • Greater mass of an object the greater the gravity • Further an object is from center the slower the object • Galaxies are moving too fast for the amount of visible mass (matter) that can be seen
Why we think Dark Matter exists? • Not enough visible mass (matter) in galaxies to account for observations • Must be Dark Matter
Why we think Dark Matter exists? • Not enough visible mass in galaxies Orbiting ball visible to us Mass (gravity) not visible to us
Why we think Dark Matter exists? • Not enough visible mass in galaxies ? Orbiting ball visible to us Mass (gravity) not visible to us
How we can “see” Dark Matter? Gravitational lensing Light is affected by the curvature of space-time (or affected by gravity in other words)
How we can “see” Dark Matter? • We can view distant galaxies through the “lens” created by gravitational bending of light.
How we can “see” Dark Matter? • Astronomers have mapped some of the Dark Matter in our universe
What is Dark Matter made up of? • WIMPS is a candidate for Data Matter • Weakly Interacting Massive Particles
What are the types of Dark Matter? • WIMPS are: • Elementary particles • Have very small interaction with ordinary matter • This why it is so hard to see them • Are very spread out (not clumped)
Why is Dark Matter important? • Holds the true secrets of the universe • Has power to influence galaxies • How they form • How fast they spin • Might hold the secret to how the universe was formed and how it will end
