My position in the CATHI network:Experienced Researcher 2 Diagnostic box including: Work Package 2: Beam Instrumentation Development (WPL2: Enrico Bravin) ER2 (E. D. Cantero): Design of beam instrumentsSpecification and conceptual design of the beam instrumentation for the REX-post accelerator upgrade. * Short Faraday cup. * Scanning slits. * Solid state detector for low intensity beams. Close collaboration with A. G. Sosa (ESR3) Also working with D. Lanaia (ESR7), M. A. Fraser (BE/RF), D. Voulot (BE/OP), F. Zocca (BE/BI).
Previous experience • 2005: Licenciado en Física (B. Sc.) • 2006: Magister en Física (M. Sc.) Orientation: Interaction of radiation withmatter • 2007 – March 2012: Phd. in PhysicsThesis: Interaction of low (E < 10 keV) and intermediate(E ~ MeV/u) energyions withsolidtargets.Location: BarilocheAtomic Center (InstitutoBalseiro) ARGENTINAAtomic Collisions and Surface PhysicsDepartment(link)Researchvisits: Laboratóriode ImplantaçãoIônica (UFRGS) BRASIL (link)
Summary of activities (I) • Contract starting date: 01-June-2012. • Numerical calculations:CST Particle studio(electrostatic fields in the Faraday cups). • Literature research: ion-induced electronsemission spectra. • Experimental work at ISOLDE: • HIE Faraday cup test (next slide). • Photodiode (beam time structure monitoring). • Beam profile images with MCP (transverse profile).
Summary of activities (II) • HIE Faraday cup (prototype): • Provided by AVS Added Value Industrial Engineering Solutions S.L. (Spain) • Installation 20/08/12. • Measurements with beam (ISOLDE): 20/08; 21/08; 03/09; 12/09 • Many interesting results at different energies (stable beam).
Project Status & Future work Tests with the prototype for the HIE-ISOLDE Faraday cup ongoing (different polarization options, accurate measurements in the whole energy range, collimator-related effects for the electron emission processes,electrons-collector installation). A HIE Diagnostic box (with Faraday cup and scanning slits) is arriving soon. It will be installed in L20 (REX-ISOLDE). Functionality tests for it are being planned. Solid state detector for low intensity beams: Si detector workbench mounted at Prevessin Laboratory, some early studies have been initiated following previous work of F. Zocca (BE/BI) et al.
Publications and attended meetings PIN Photodiode test report on the REX-ISOLDE post-accelerator. (A. G. Sosa et al, EDMS document, 22/08/2012). HIE-ISOLDE Beam Transfer Technical Design Review, 06/07/2012. HEBT meetings (weekly), with progress reports about FC tests.
Training • Radiological protection. Forthcoming: • International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC 2012)Tsukuba, Japan, October 1-4, 2012. • General and professional French courses at CERN (starting October 8, 2012) • US Particle Accelerator School (USPAS 2013)Durham, North Carolina, USA, January 14-25, 2013.
Conclusions Conceptual design of the beam instruments for HIE-ISOLDE is well advanced, with some prototype equipment already built and tested at REX-ISOLDE. Challenging specifications for the diagnostic boxes and its instruments due to a very short longitudinal space available are being studied in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of experts (instrumentation, radiofrequency, operators, mechanical design, etc). The CATHI ITN program is an excellent opportunity for my postdoctoral studies, and will probably act as a career booster for me, due to the many contacts and hands-on experience that I am already obtaining.
