Figurative Language What are some types of what we call figurative language? Why do you think authors use figurative language?
Types of Figurative Language Simile – comparing two unlike things often introduced by like or as Ex. He is like a bull when he gets angry. Metaphor – a direct comparison of two usually unlike things Ex. She is a cheetah when she runs.
Idiom – the language specific to a people or to a district or community Ex. Today went by as quick as a New York minute. Hyperbole – proving a point by using exaggeration Ex. I have a million things to do for homework.
Onomatopoeia – words that sound like the noise they make Ex. Her books went bang as she dropped them in the hallway. Personification – to give an object or animal human traits Ex. The car screamed as it went quickly around the corner.
Which statements are figurative language? She has a chip on her shoulder. Make sure you turn in your homework. Usain Bolt ran as though he were shot out of a cannon. I am so hungry I could eat a horse.
Technical Language Technical language – (or specialized vocabulary) is made up of specific words and phrases that are important to a field of expertise. Ex. Touchdown, offsides, lateral, & sweep are examples of technical language from what sport? Ex. Crescendo, coda, & refrain could be considered technical language in what field?
