QUESTION TO ANSWER WHAT HAPPENS TO THE INGREDIENTS THAT MAKES PEANUT BRITTLE HAVE A HARD SURFACE?
OBJECTIVES • Participate in both chemical and physical changes in an experiment to make peanut brittle. • Identify chemical changes in mixtures.
RESEARCH: When a chemical change occurs in a mixture, some signs of that change can be observed. Some of the signs that a chemical change has occurred include: color changes, forming a gas or foaming, temperature changes and the forming of a precipitate (a solid settling out of the solution.)
Ingredients • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup light corn syrup • ½ cup water • 2cupsshelled raw peanuts • 2 tablespoons butter • 2teaspoons baking soda • 1teaspoon vanilla
Preparation • Assemble all the equipment needed for the experiment. • Measure all ingredients and set on counter ready to be added as needed. • Pour water into saucepan and bring to boil. • Add sugar and syrup. • Boil until it “spins a good thread”. • Add peanuts and boil until golden brown and peanuts are cooked. • Remove from heat and add butter, vanilla and baking soda, stir well. • Pour into well buttered cookie sheet, or non-stick cake pan. • Break into pieces when cool. • Store in an airtight container.
