Aim • Assess static failure loads for check sockets (CSs), copolymer sockets (CPs), and definitive laminated sockets (DLs). • Compare facilities, fabrication material and methods, and socket thickness. • Relevance • While International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards exist for most lower-limb prosthetic components, they do not include prosthetic sockets.
Methods • We used modified ISO 10328 to measure static failure loads of prosthetic sockets. • Compared them with criteria set by this standard for other components. Static socket testing configuration.
Results • CS Static Strength • Influenced by thickness, material choice, fabrication method. • CP Static Strength • Depended on thickness, fabrication method. • DL Static Strength • Influenced by material choice, fabrication method. • Ductile loading criterion: • Most CSs and all CPs failed in a ductile mode. • Brittle loading criterion: • Most DLs failed in a brittle mode.
Conclusions • Our results provide: • Foundation for understanding quality of prosthetic sockets. • Insight into possible routes for improving current care delivered to patients. • Comparative basis for future technology.
