Negative reinforcement is a form of punishment and a means to control, ~ it is not motivation Negative reinforcement is designed to extinguish behavior, not motivate it
Punishment is an overt use of coercive power with the intent to put the employee in a position of submission
What are the outcomes when a manager continually chooses to use punishment or coercive means with employees?
Experienced powerlessness [fallacy: ees will be satisfied with less] • Sense of futile fate and resignation [fallacy: ees become more loyal to the firm] • Low self-esteem [fallacy: the need for recognition is eliminated; ees will be more ‘manageable’] • Self-doubt [fallacy: ees will work harder to salvage identities]
There is a high price to pay for using punishment with employees • Submissive, fearful employees with low sense of esteem, power & identity end up being highly ineffective ~ plus, eventually they will end up slashing your tires in the parking lot
When is the time to use coercive means with employees? They are engaging in behavior that is destructive to them, or to others + You have exhausted other means + The employee is expendable
