  2. Ray didn’t want to be there. He didn’t like anything about the place. It was awful! He couldn’t think of one single thing he enjoyed about it. He couldn’t believe his parents made him go. Where is Ray? When is he there? He could be anywhere!

  3. Ray didn’t want to be there. He didn’t like anything about the place. It was awful! He didn’t like the bugs biting him, or the idea that anything could crawl across his sleeping bag in the middle of the night. It was too hot and the wind made scary sounds blowing through the trees in the night. He couldn’t think of one single thing he liked about it! He couldn’t believe his parents made him go. He couldn’t wait until the weekend was over. Where is Ray and When? How do we know?

Inside each bag are some clues that will help describe setting. Each group must look at the things in each sack and decide where they are from. Write your answer by the number on your paper that matches the number on the bag.

  12. Getting the Main Idea • There are many ways to get the main idea of a story. You can look at the pictures. You can read the title or topic sentences. Or you can scan the page for details or key words. • Looking at the picture below, what do you think is the main idea of this book? • Judging from the title, what is the main idea of the book?

  13. Read the paragraph and notice the topic sentence, details, and the key words. • Alligators are quick swimmers. They are strong animals. They spend a lot of time in the water, but they also like to rest on the sand. They are quicker in the water than on the land because they can swim fast, but theycannot run very fast.If I were swimming and I saw an alligator, I would jump out of the water fast and run away. I wouldn’t try to get away by swimming. I know I would have a better chance on land because I can run faster than an alligator.
