APhA TASK FORCE • APhA has examined the issue of Pharmacy Care OTCs multiple times over the past several years • Most recently, a Task Force was convened in August 2004 to make recommendations on how a pharmacy only category of OTCs might work
APhA TASK FORCEWhat is a pharmacy care OTC? • OTC medication distributed only in outlets with a pharmacy • Distributed on open shelves with current OTC products • Does not require pharmacist intervention, but supports it • Expands supportive services such as cholesterol testing and counseling • Especially beneficial for potential first-time users and chronic users with questions
TASK FORCE PRINCIPLES • Detail what pharmacies and pharmacists must consider when they sell Pharmacy Care OTCs: • How to support consumer/pharmacist interaction • Scope of consumer/pharmacist interaction • Necessary services in the facility
