  3. CHARACTERICSTICS OF SPANISH COLONIAL PERIOD IN TEXAS • Roman Catholic Religion • Missions and presidios • Civil Settlements • Canary Islanders • Founding of San Antonio • Camino Real

  4. ROMAN CATHOLIC RELIGION • Driving force in supporting Spanish Colonization in Texas. Their goal was to spread the Catholic Religion and Christianize the native Texans and make them loyal subjects of Spain.

  5. Missions And Presidios • Main vehicle for colonization. • Had to support themselves. • Were to convert Native Texans. • 1st Mission- In El Paso Corpus Christi de la Ysleta • Presidios protected the Missions.

  6. Towns • Towns and settlements were build around missions and colonist were brought in to help grow and survive. First town established in 1718 at San Antonio. In 1730, Canary Islanders were brought in to increase the population.

  7. Ranches • Ranching was more conducive where missions and settlement were thriving (San Antonio). Cattle were easier to raise and protect than farming.

  8. Camino Real • Known as “Kings Highway” and “ Old San Antonio Road”. • It was the main path for the settlers to move to the missions in East Texas • Today it is on the same path as HI 21 from San Marcos to College Station.
