  1. THECRIB

  2. The crib is a representation of Jesus’ birth, which goes back to medieval traditions. It is a modern reconstruction of the place where Jesus born, from the cave to the stars, from the Magi to the shepherds, the ox and the donkey to the lambs and so on. This Italian tradition dates back to S. Francisco from Assisi, who in 1223 created a “Greccio” the first living representation of the Nativity.

  3. The crib is a rich representation of symbols. Some of these come directly from the Gospel accounts, such as the manger, the adoration of the shepherds and the presence of the angels in heaven.

  4. Since the Nativity has been dealt in a very vague way by the canonical gospel, the crib relates to the apocryphal gospels as well. Just to name a few, the ox and the donkey, which we can find in each crib, are the result of an ancient prophecy of Isaiah. Even the stable or cave where Mary and Joseph would have given birth to the Messiah does not appear in the canonical gospels. The Magi, instead derive from Armenian Gospel.

However, some aspects derive from more recent traditions.The Neapolitan crib, for example, adds to the scene many popular characters, inns, traders and typical houses of the farming villages, but nevertheless the sacred art is always represented. It has some special features, in addition to the classic characters, the nativity scene includes famous people (singers, actors, dancers, politicians) and many others. 

  6. That’s why people from all over the world spend their Christmas holiday in Naples, particularly in San Gregorio Armeno to see and buy a crib. However, all this happens not only in Naples but in many italian regions, where different methods are used to represent “Jesus’ Birth”.
