Quantified Self TOPIC 3:
WORD ASSOCIATION QUANTIFIED SELF
Quantified Self THE RISE OF QUANTIFIED SELF https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V08dWCtDyd8 Quantified Self: Using technology to acquire data on people’s daily lives. • Automatic or Self-Tracking • Inputs • Mental/Physical States • Performance
VIDEO DICUSSION The narrator of this video makes the joke: “This data is not just for bragging on social media” Have you noticed any of this “bragging” on social media from either your friends? Do you do this for a sense of pride? How does seeing data about your friends on social media make you feel? How do you feel sharing it? “This is a ‘gold mine’ for medical researchers.” Think for a moment about how new these devices, apps, and trackers are. Think about how much has changed since the advent of them? How has it changed your behavior? Why do you track things? Do you track things that you don’t want other people to know about/access? “This could be the beginning of an entirely new medical system” HOW? What might change/get better/get worse as a result of self quantifying?
READING DISCUSSION Does QS actually make us happier? What’s more important, being happier or being productive? (Or… do we have to pick one?) Do these feelings of productivity make us happier in the long-term? Is productivity from QS fleeting, day-to-day happiness? “WHY COUNTING YOUR STEPS COULD MAKE YOU UNHAPPIER” BY DUKE PROFESSOR, JORDAN ETKIN
READING DISCUSSION “69% of U.S. adults track at least one health metric…” • What does this mean for big data? How do you think most U.S. adults probably track these health metrics? Do you relate QS projects to the quality of your own life first and foremost? How concerned are you with future discoveries that QS projects might make due to generations of big data? Example of Self-Quantifying https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nud8XApWb4 PERIOD TRACKER APP
Class Activity Pull out your phone and take an inventory of the apps you have that you self-track with. Now, write down the name of the app What’s its category? (smoking, fitness, health stats, moods, sex, medication, food, etc) How often do you input data into it? Does the app simply track your data, or output data based on what you input? TOPIC 3.2 QUANTIFIED SELF
Reading Discussion QS research has shown information on the psychology of empowerment and taking responsibility. Does this relate to the whole concept of productivity--how productivity and happiness might collide? In terms of public databases that collect health-related info., to what extent are we willing to share personal data in a QS project? Do you think QS projects, especially regarding health, have made us less private? Swan discussed how researcher Amy Robinson's idea-tracking process, where she emails herself ideas and inspirations and later visualizes them in an open-source graphing tool. • Does anyone have a similar process for keeping track of ideas, or has at least taken steps like this--maybe a notebook full of ideas? “THE QUANTIFIED SELF: FUNDAMENTAL DISRUPTION IN BIG DATA SCIENCE AND BIOLOGICAL DISCOVERY”
READING DISCUSSION QS has posed a problem for big data science because of the influx of the much larger QS data sets being generated... • At the current rate of new technology and technological capabilities, do you think long-term storage for these big data sets will catch up to/be on track with QS data sets? Would you consider self-tracking to be science? Does it feel better, or more valid, if we call it science? “THE QUANTIFIED SELF: FUNDAMENTAL DISRUPTION IN BIG DATA SCIENCE AND BIOLOGICAL DISCOVERY”
CLASS QUESTION WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ABLE TO TRACK IN THE FUTURE?
CLASS ACTIVITY • Groupify. Then, with your group, decide on something that people might like to track. You will create a fake mobile app that will generally follow these guidelines: • Name your app! • What information will users input? How much do they need to input in order for it to be accurate? • What information will be given to the user based on their inputs? • Self-tracking, or automatic (using GPS, sensors, etc. Think calorie counter v. Fitbit) • Other interesting things you could think about: Who might use this? Will it/would it have the potential to change the way we live? QUANTIFIED SELF APP DEVELOPER
