Who were the Vikings? • A.D 800 – 11th Century • Sea-faring Scandinavians known as Vikings or Norsemen (“Northmen”) • Viking culture defined by the rest of Europe primarily as non-Christian • began by raiding the British Isles but ventured as far as modern day Russia, Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland
