Image Gathering Techniques For Collecting Images
Introduction • How to collect usable images • What acceptable images look like • What makes unacceptable images
Overview The Four Criteria for an acceptable image • Story Height • Building Shape • Construction Type • General Exterior Condition
Construction Type – Not AcceptableGeneral Exterior Condition
Photo Taking Tips– Do’s • Frame subject in camera viewfinder • Look from side to side in viewfinder without moving camera • Zoom in to fill frame with image, or walk in closer • Keep sun behind you if possible • Shield lens from sun glare • Make sure image has been recorded before moving camera
Additional Do’s • If you are recording the image number on a list or PRC, do it immediately after you take it. • To avoid images where the house is shadowed, from auto balance, tilt the camera down slightly and remember, “MORE GROUND, THAN SKY”.
Image Collection Don’ts • Don’t forget to view your image before moving on-you are there now-you don’t want to have to come back • Don’t be afraid to take more than one shot-if you aren’t sure if it is an acceptable image take another • If you are not a County Employee, do not Trespass-take your photos from the right of way
Additional Tips • Have a prepared statement or flyer (approved) that you can give Residents who have questions, with a number they can call. It will keep you moving • Identification Badges are a good idea • If you are going to be doing a lot of collecting in an area, let the police know, if it is a rough neighborhood maybe they will go with you
Additional Tips (continued) • Carry extra memory cards and batteries • Get a battery charger that will plug into the cigarette lighter in your car • Use your camera strap-digital cameras are fragile, if you drop it, it is history • Don’t leave your camera in your vehicle, if the sun and heat don’t get it, a thief will
Parting Shots • Image collection is an expensive exercise, whether it is part of a data collection effort or as a stand alone activity, so make sure that you get a good image while you are there, because it costs even more to send you back! • When collecting images, just like any type of field work, be professional, the public is watching • Be careful! No image is worth risking your personal safety. If you are in an accident, follow your company or jurisdiction’s policy • Have fun and take good pictures
