Static IP Tutorial June 25, 2009
What is a Static IP?A static IP address is a number (in the form of a dotted quad) that is assigned to a device by an Internet service provider (ISP) to be its permanent address on the Internet. Computers use IP addresses to locate and talk to each other on the Internet, much the same way people use phone numbers to locate and talk to one another on the telephone.
Why do customers need static IPs?You run one or more Web , Email or FTP server's directly on your site that require external access from the Internet. You run any other service or 'Application' that requires external access from the Internet.
Why do some customers need so many?Customers may request larger blocks of IPs if they have multiple servers or applications that require access from the Internet. All requests for multiple IPs should be validated.
What equipment is required additional IPs ?For Knology Fiber and Matrix customers requiring more than one (1) static IP address, the customer will need to have in place a device capable of Layer 3 routing. This device could be a router, switch or firewall. Knology will route all additional IPs to the WAN/Gateway interface of that device via a single IP (/30). The customer will then manage the additional subnet provided via their layer 3 capable equipment. Knology does NOT manage IPs beyond the WAN/Gateway interface.
What should be submitted for IP justification ?1) Network diagram [showing your routers, switches, etc]2) Server information [i.e., type of application, those who will be accessing the application, will access be only from internal network? external network? both? etc]3) What type of equipment will use the additional IP addresses? [i.e., mail server, web server, etc]4) Internal LAN - Will internal LAN be assigned public or private IP addresses?
Information needed to request IPs (NEW)?1) Number of IPs requested by customer – Single Block2) Justification information if required3) What type of equipment will use the IP (router,switch)4) Brand and Model of equipment5) Is the CPE Layer 3 capable?6) Has IP routing been explained to the customer?
Information needed to request IPs (EXISTING)?1) Number of IPs requested by customer – Single Block2) Justification information if required3) Customer type.4) What type of equipment will use the IP (router,switch)5) Brand and Model of equipment6) Is the CPE Layer 3 capable?7) Has IP routing been explained to the customer?8) A new IP block may be assigned.
Current ProjectsAssignment of routable IPs to all business customers.Working toward the ability to pre-assign IP addresses.
