  9. About Storage Virtualization

  10. Basic Storage Virtualization Slicing Combining Physical LUNs Physical LUN Virtual Drives Virtual Drive

  11. How FalconStor Storage Virtualization Works ESX-2 • Quickly create virtual volumes from physical disk resources • Physical LUN and virtual devices up to 16TB • Expand volumes as needed • Store VMDK files on virtual volumes • Securely assign volumes to servers through NSS interface ESX-1 FC or iSCSI Virtual disks Physical disks

  12. Thin Provisioning:Better Storage Utilization • Create a virtual volume to match size of data provisioning request • Allocate a smaller amount of actual physical disk space • Additional physical space allocated automatically as needed • Reduces wasteful over provisioning of storage • Saves disk space and power consumption Application server sees virtual volume size “800 GB” ESX-1 Virtual 800GB Physical 200GB Data A Green feature Thin provisioned SAN volume

  13. Storage Virtualization Benefits • Provides a quick and easy way to provision and share storage resources as needed • Works with and across any type of storage (SAS, SATA, SSD...) and any brand • Shared storage enables VMware advanced features (VMotion, VMware HA, Distributed Resource Scheduler) • Allows easy growth of virtual resources • Space savings through thin provisioning

  14. Recovery Challenges in a Virtualized Environment

  15. Disaster Recovery Challenges • Organizations face an urgent need for effective, efficient disaster recovery • Traditional DR solutions are complex, expensive, slow and prone to failure • Due to costs, DR plans are often limited in scope and do not protect all corporate IT assets • Difficult to perform DR rehearsals, test plan verification * Reported by Eagle Rock Alliance Ltd., “ONLINE SURVEY RESULTS 2001 COST OF DOWNTIME”

  16. The Current VMware Backup Landscape 80% of VMware users are using backup to tape 24% of VMware users are using VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) Of the major VMware products (ESX, Vmotion, vCenter Server, etc.) VCB has the lowest satisfaction rating and the lowest perceived return on investment* * All statistics from VMware customer survey data from July-August 2008

  17. Virtualization Changes Server, Application, and Information Paradigm… Innovative Storage Service Needed to Deliver Greater Consolidation, Value Low overall server utilization: CPU cycle available to server-based applications such as Backup agent, Replication… High overall server utilization: Not much CPU/IO bandwidth left for host-based applications: Backup Agent. Replication… • Server virtualization was introduced to save money and/or improve service levels, so what are the plans to address recovery?

  18. The problem, simply put “Backups hit the most vulnerable points with VMware: its narrow ability to handle excessive disk and network I/O... A backup load is one of the worst loads for a VMware server to accommodate.” -- Ashley D’Costa From Three VMware data backup and restore methods SearchDataBackup.com, 4/11/08

  19. DR Challenges in Virtual Environments • Physical server resources, disk and network I/O tend to be highly utilized • This is by design • Impacts backup processing • Backing up active VMDK files leads to crash-consistent data (at best) or lost/corrupted data (at worst) • Coordinating VM shutdown with snapshots and backups takes sophisticated scripting ability • Relationships between physical disks and VMDK files requires careful coordination BU Agent BU Agent BU Agent BU Agent Physical Storage

  20. What to look for in a DR solution for VMware

  21. What to look for in a DR solution for VMware

  22. Data Integrity and System Recovery

  23. Enhancing Data Protection What can we do to enhance data protection?

  24. VMware Recovery with FalconStor Software • FalconStor software provides a set of tools to enhance VMware data protection • 100% transactional integrity of data for fast restores • WAN-optimized data replication to reduce bandwidth use by 90% or more • Integration with VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) • Physical-to-virtual support with SRM

  25. Application-centric Protection Why is application integration important? Because when you recover, you want your data to look like this And not like this

  26. Giving Names to Eggs Crash Consistent Data Transactionally Complete Data

  27. FalconStor Application Snapshot Director for VMware • The Application Snapshot Director for VMware designed to ensure transactional integrity of data • Data is not in a crash consistent state (it is 100% transactionally consistent) • No need for lengthy system/DB checking • Coordinates snapshot process between VMware and FalconStor application-specific and file system-specific snapshot agents • Runs on the ESX server • Integrates with Site Recovery Manager

  28. What is VMware Site Recovery Manager? • VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) is a new product for disaster recovery that does the following: • Simplifies and automates key disaster recovery workflows: setup, testing, failover, failback • Simplifies and centralizes management of recovery plans • This combination of disaster recovery automation with the capabilities of VMware Infrastructure reduces time to recover, risk, complexity and cost • However, SRM by itself does not address: • Application/transactional integrity • WAN bandwidth utilization • Flexibility in choosing a disk array vendor

  40. WAN Optimization

  41. Achieving Efficient Data Replication Deploy sub-block replication to move your data

  42. MicroScan WAN optimization • Applications and file systems write far more data to disk than actual changes • NSS scans the changes at a 512 byte level and replicates only the changed data • Avoids constant re-sending of duplicate data 512 byte = empty disk sector = data written by application or file system = sector with actual data change 512 byte Disk sectors A typical 8k write of data. Many systems send all 8k or more. NSS sends only the truly changed sectors.

  43. MicroScan WAN Savings Example • Actual user production data for Microsoft Exchange replication • 1300 users, hourly replication from CA to PA • High random-write nature of Exchange is well suited to MicroScan removal of duplicate data • Average WAN traffic reduction of 97% with no additional network equipment needed

  44. Solution Delivery • FalconStor SRA will be distributed within VMware SRM offering without additional costs • Also available as a free plug-in download online from FalconStor.com • FalconStor will provide free activation of FalconStor SRA to its customers who purchase • FalconStor NSS Appliances • FalconStor MicroScan for Thin Replication • FalconStor Application Snapshot Director for ESX
