Challenging CAS Orthodoxies An Exercise in Changing the Status Quo
What? • Orthodox (adjective ) • or·tho·dox | \ ˈȯr-thə-ˌdäks \ Definition of orthodox • 1a: conforming to established doctrine • 1b: CONVENTIONAL • took an orthodox approach to the problem
WHY? • Challenging orthodoxy is the final aim of curiosity in the modern business world. Old-school strategies are no longer effective and need to evolve, which is possible only when a culture of listening and questioning is prevalent within an organization. This leads to a company that is cognizant of potential conflicts, issues and threats, resulting in the development of appropriate proactive business strategies. • Exposing orthodoxies helps reveal existing assumptions, blind spots, and limiting behaviors. Challenging or overturning them can lead to new opportunities from looking at our business model in a new way. • By Simon T. Bailey from The Business Journals; by Michael Graber from Innovation Excellence
A few examples in everyday life • We always get paid once every other week. • Teachers are the best at teaching students. • You can never show anything in “red status” on a dashboard (green, yellow, red)
How to flip orthodoxies • Be ruthless about finding them • Ask “why not?” • Widen your field of vision • Look in unfamiliar places • Be a credible heretic • Understand the ramifications of change • Recognize those who dare • CAS Leadership attribute… • From Bansi Nagji and Helen Walters from The Globe and Mail
