God is Present in a Small Group in Ways That He is Not with an Individual Matthew 18:19-20 “’If two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them’” (NIV).
Something mystical takes place among believers who are in unity John 17:20-22 (ESV) “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one.”
When believers are together in one place, there should be an atmosphere of love that is tangible John 13:35 “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (NIV)
We are Meant to Share Deeply James 5:16 (ESV) Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Acts 2:44 (ESV) All who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Unbelievers Would be Able to Have an Encounter with God 1 Corinthians 14:24-25 (NIV) But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”
Create good soil • Matthew 13 Parable of the Sower or Parable of the Seeds • The first seed was snatched away before they could believe, but in the right environment, that would be harder to happen • With a nurturing environment, trouble would not cause someone to fall away like happened with the second seed. • Perhaps even with a family of believers, worries and cares would be less likely to grow like weeds, as in the third seed.
Summary of Main Points 1) Agree together in prayer, it will be done by the Father 2) Gather in his name, Jesus will be tangibly in our midst 3) An atmosphere of genuine love gives us strength and also draws in people who are lost 4) Different spiritual gifts in use in the church can cause an unbeliever to have an encounter with God 5) Encouragement from other believers helps us stay strong in faith 6) We need others to be things which we are not made to be 7) Two or more working together are safer and can accomplish more 8) Fellowship is of great value
