  2. What are Computer Systems? • Computer systems process data electronically • Data is information which has no meaning eg 161182. • Information is data which has been given meaning eg the Date of Birth 16/11/82 • Computers are programmable so that we can tell them what to do. • Computers also include small programmed systems found in appliances such as Washing machines, microwave ovens and video recorders.

  3. Parts of a Computer System • Computer systems are made up of Hardware and Software. • Data is input, it is changed in some way or processed and then the results are returned to the user as an output. • The data can be stored for later use in the backing store.

  4. ROM Read only Memory can be read but it cannot be written to. ROM is not volatile and the data stored is not lost when the computer is switched off. ROM contains the programmes the computer needs to start, often called boot programs. RAM Random Access Memory. The processor can talk to any part directly. The processor can read from and write to RAM. RAM is volatile. It loses the contents on switch off. RAM is loaded with data and programs that the user wishes to use. There is always a lot more RAM than ROM. Read/Write Memory RAM Processor ROM Read only

  5. Hardware • Hardware is the word used to describe devices. These are the parts of a system you can touch and see. • Peripherals. These are the devices connected to the computer box. Some like the cisk drives are mounted inside the box, others are connected externally like printers. • Types of peripherals include input devices, output devices and backing storage devices.

  6. Software • These are the programs that the computer needs to run. • Programs are stored instructions which tell the computer what to do. • There are two main types of Software: • Applications Software. These do the jobs that the user wants such as word processing a letter or storing employee details. • Operating Systems. These control the hardware so that the user and their applications can easily make use of them. E.g. printer, hard disk etc.

  7. Internet Resource Data storage • ROM • RAM • Backing store - magnetic disks • Backing store - optical disks • Backing store - magnetic tape • Sample Questions • Glossary • A computer has two different types of storage: • the computer's memory (ROM and RAM) • a backing store
