  5. In 1990 The United Nations Added the “Convention on the Rights of the Child” What is the United Nations? The United Nations is an important link between countries in the global village. (Like a big club) Countries who join the club agree to work together towards certain goals. The main purpose is to prevent wars.

  6. The UN believes the best way to prevent wars is to work towards 3 goals To make sure that the basic human rights of all people are respected To help people from different cultures understand one another To work together to solve global problems such as poverty and environmental destruction

  7. The UN charter in kids language: Treat everyone as an equal Work towards the goals No fighting No bullying Once the club agrees to do something, help make it happen Don’t be nosy and get involved with the private matters of club members

  8. What happens if you don’t follow the rules? A country might be expelled from the UN Refuse to trade with that country How to settle differences? -Talking -UN will send soldiers to stop fighting (peacekeepers) Canada is famous for this!

Human Rights The Commission on Human Rights This is an organization in the United Nations that is responsible for human rights. -They study human rights around the world -They help countries make laws to protect human rights -They write conventions and declarations on human rights. Where? In Geneva Switzerland

  13. UNICEF(The United Nations Children’s Fund) This organization helps protect the rights of the world’s children. How? -Educating people about children’s rights -Helping families care for children
