  1. The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher Project Director, IT Strategic Planning and Resource Coordination Initiatives MIT (until 7/13) Director, Advanced Computing Infrastructure and Systems Renaissance Computing Institute (after 7/16)

  2. Outline • Overview of the Campus Cyberinfrastructure (CCI) Working Group • Current activities • Future directions The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher

  3. Motivation for CCI • Cyberinfrastructure (CI) is a rapidly growing component of information technology throughout industry, government and academia • Its reach spans a broad spectrum of IT in each sector with many facets and perspectives • Generates a powerful momentum that drives new technologies and methodologies across user communities • These developments are generating new results with profound implications for changing whole disciplines, educational initiatives, and research methodologies The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher

  4. Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group • Educause recognized these trends in the higher education user community • In 2006 the Campus Cyberinfrastructure (CCI) Working Group was organized with a mission to help both - Educational institutions develop institutional strategies and plan their resource deployment in this emerging and evolving technological landscape - Users harness and optimize the power and capabilities of these new integrated IT tools and systems for educational and research applications in higher education. The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher

  5. CCI Organizational Structure • Structure • Co-chairs • Steering Committee • Working Group • Topical Focus Groups • Sponsorship of • Workshops • Conferences • White papers and documents on these topics • Interactions with federal funding agencies and other sponsors • CCI web page http://www.educause.edu/CampusCyberinfrastructure%28CCI%29WorkingGroup/10288 The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher

  6. CCI Leadership • 2 Co-chairs • Guy Almes • Patrick Dreher • Steering Committee • Jim Bottum • Sue Fratkin • Bonnie Neas • Jim Pepin • Focus Group Chairs • Klara Jelinkova • Paul Killey The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher

  7. Major CCI Activities The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher

  8. Snowmass ’06 Workshop • In the summer of 2006, the NSF sponsored a workshop for CCI to identify and develop strategies for addressing the critical issues of campus cyberinfrastructure (CI) • CCI Workshop held at Snowmass CO in August 2006 • Focus spectrum of CI through the lens of higher education • Relevant set of engines and drivers The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher

  9. Engines/Drivers of Campus Cyberinfrastructure* • Campus Communities and Constituencies: Enabler in partnerships with researchers, not as an IT service provider • Computing and Communications: Opportunities, synergies (grids), economies of scale for high performance computing, research networks and enhanced support facilities • Information Management: Various aspects of data creation, storage, handling, retrieval, distribution interpretation, security, policies on research data, including partnerships and opportunities with libraries and repositories • Virtual communities: Opportunities associated with scholars partnering with IT organizations to create the software environments that facilitate discovery among distributed communities • Partnership Strategies: Development of proposals and relationships that enhance the partnership among researchers, universities, and funding organizations to enhance the nation’s cyberinfrastructure  (local, state, federal, international, private) *CCI August 2006 Snowmass Workshop The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher

  10. Focused Activity from the Snowmass ’06 Workshop • Not practical for the working group to address all five drivers of CI simultaneously • Two Focus Groups established The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher

  11. CCI Focus Groups • Defining Cyberinfrastructure for Campus Leaders • Goal - develop a series of tools that will help CIOs educate campus administrators, faculty and researchers on the concept of why CI is important to a higher education institution. Klara Jelinkova, Duke University • Business Models for Data Centers • Goal – summarize the challenges and opportunities focused on developing and supporting data centers on campus Paul Killey, University of Michigan Ann-Arbor The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher

  12. Future Directions and Outreach • CI is here – now – on each of your campuses and is growing rapidly • How CI is addressed on your campus will be a key determining factor as to how well your faculty will be able to take full advantage and participate in many new projects and collaborations • Opportunity at this Cyberinfrastructure Summit • Forum for senior IT leaders, Educause, and the CCI Group to focus on this issue, share information, experiences, and ideas • Interface with CCI and work with you to identify and shape solutions for the future The Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group Patrick Dreher
