ELHS Graduation Criteria and Class Scheduling Class of 2020
BASICS: . • There are 2 semesters in the school year, each semester is 18 weeks long. During each 18 week stretch, you should receive up to 2 progress reports and 2 report cards. • 4 to 5 classes in a day • Classes change each semester. We have incorporated a few year long classes this year to provide additional academic support in difficult content areas. • Each class is 1 hour and 30 minutes • 5 minute break between each class • Lunch break is 30 minutes, from bell to bell. • Cell phones are only allowed to be used during lunch.
. Grading Procedures: New 10 Point Grading Scale Retake Calculation Example: Original Grade: 50 Retake Grade 80 (50 x .25) + (80 x .75) = 12.5 + 60 = 72.5 New Grade
Course Requirements • These are the generic required courses you MUST to take in order to graduate: (Your guidance counselor will go over all of this with you each time you register for classes.) • 28 Credits are needed for Graduation • Math – 4 Credits • Math I • Math II • Math III • 4th Level Math - You have to take a higher level math to graduate EX) Pre-Calculus, AFM, SREB Ready Math, AP Calculus, Discrete Math, AP Statistics • c) English Credits – 4 Credits • d) Science – 3 Credits • Earth & Environmental, Biology, A Physical Science (Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Principles of Tech I) • e) Social Studies – 4 Credits • Civics and Economics, World History, American History I & II • f) Health & Physical Education – 1 Credit • g) 10 Elective Credits (2 of the 10 have to be either a CTE Class, World Language, or Arts)

AP/Honors Courses • In order to take an AP class, you have to meet the criteria. • As a freshman, most of you will not be taking AP classes yet. • If you are interested in taking AP Classes, you will need to make sure you are taking the required prerequisite courses. • Get to know your Guidance Counselors, they will be your best friends! • Mrs. Matthews, Mrs. Withers, Mrs. Lackey, and Ms. Smith • The Guidance Counselor Assigned to the Graduating Class of 2020 is • Mrs. Nicola Withers.
EXAM SCHEDULE • State Tested Exams • EOC, NC Common Exams, VOCATS • Teacher Made Exams – May exempt if you meet the exemption policy for grades and attendance. • All Final Exams are 20% of your course grade.
Exam Exemption Policy • Students can exempt teacher made tests only if they meet the following qualifications: • “A” Average – 4 or fewer absences & no more than 4 tardies for semester. • “B” Average – 3 or fewer absences & no more than 3 tardies for semester. • “C” Average - 2 or fewer absences & no more than 2 tardies for semester. • Leaving early or being tardy for class can impact your exam exemption opportunity.
Attendance Policy • LCS Board Policy 4400 • After 5 unexcused absences, students are in jeopardy of losing course credit. • Students must remain in a class at least one hour to be counted present for the day. • When a student is absent a valid written excuse must be submitted to the office • within three school days of the student’s return or the absence will be unexcused. • Parent notes to cover 5 days will be accepted. All additional notes must come from a doctor, • dentist, or court to be excused. • Excused Absences: Illness or Injury, Quarantine, Death in Immediate Family, Medical • or Dental, Court, Religious Observance, Educational Opportunity. The last two • require prior approval by the principal.

Student Portal • LCS Website – PowerSchool for Students • Make sure you have your login and password. • Monitor your grades, class progress, and attendance frequently. • Your parents can also monitor your progress through the PowerSchool for Parents.
