Advertising Vocabulary. Most Advertisement use the same techniques to sell their products. Here are some of these techniques and a brief description of each. Basic Message. What is the advertisement trying to sell? What is the message that the advertisers want you to learn from their ad?.

  1. Advertising Vocabulary Most Advertisement use the same techniques to sell their products. Here are some of these techniques and a brief description of each.

  2. Basic Message • What is the advertisement trying to sell? • What is the message that the advertisers want you to learn from their ad?

  3. Visual Image • Have the advertisers used any interesting pictures or photographs that catch your attention? • Are they in color or black and white?

  4. Medium • Is the advertisement on television, radio, or in print?

  5. Catchy Words • Do the advertisers include any catchy words to sell their product? • Are there any descriptive words used in the ad? Special Amazing NEW FREE One of a Kind

  6. Testimonial • Is a person describing how the product has made their life better? • Is there a statement or endorsement from a famous person? (celebrity endorsement) • Michael Phelps Brett Favre

  7. Bandwagon • Does the advertiser tell you that it’s the cool thing to do? • Do they say that everybody is doing it?

  8. Product Character • Does their product have a special character or logo?

  9. Product Slogan • Does their advertisement include a catchy jingle or slogan? • Examples: • Free credit report.com • Mmm Mmm Good- (Campbell's soups) • I’m lovin’ it (McDonalds)

  10. Product Comparison • Is there a comparison with another product? • Do they say their product is much better than another product?

  11. Repetition • Do they repeat the product name or catchy phrases or slogans to help you remember them more easily?

  12. Cute Factor • Images that pull at the heart strings

  13. Emotional Appeal • A person is made to have strong feelings about a situation or product

  14. Wit and Humor • diverts audience and gives a reason to laugh often through the use of clever visuals and/or language

  15. Expert Opinion Experts approve this product, so you should use it “Four out of five dentists recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum”

  16. Audience Awareness Advertisers know how to • target their audiences • use appropriate persuasive technique
