The math of moles… the moles of math…. Scientific notation. 3.00 x 10 8 = 1.115 x 10 -6 =. Flippy poo direction. 0.00444 = 3255000 =. A couple for the road. Show me your skillz 5.22 x 10 7 0.00000068 310000000000 7.4 x 10 -7. General number rules. Mid sized numbers leave em be.
E N D
Scientific notation • 3.00 x 108 = • 1.115 x 10-6 =
Flippy poo direction • 0.00444 = • 3255000 =
A couple for the road • Show me your skillz • 5.22 x 107 • 0.00000068 • 310000000000 • 7.4 x 10-7
General number rules • Mid sized numbers leave em be. • Really big #’s use scientific notation • Really small #’s, put in scientific notation • Generally, show me a “few” non-zero numbers in your answer…. • 102.33 • 1.45 x 105 • 0.000 = VERY BAD ANSWER… need non-zeros.
Impress with you calculations.. • (3.55 x 104)(2.443 x 106) • Did you get 86726500000??? • How about 3.55 x 104/2.443 x 106 • Did you get 14531313958.2??? • NAUGHTY!!! • 0.0145 is correct… • yarp
calculators… • Look for exponential button: ee, een, exp, x 10n • Type in 5 then hit your exponent button • 5E 5 • 5*10 • 5E6 5 • 5*108 • Both = 5 x 106 or 5000000 0 0 0 6
Try it again… • How about 3.55 x 104/2.443 x 106 • 0.0145 is correct… you rock… • Know how to use your calculator well… • Or you will be in a world of hurt! • yarp
did we talk about… • The counting lab???? • Yep… • Words to represent numbers • Dozen = 12 • Century = 100 • Yarp = infinity
The mole… • 1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 (avogadro’s #) • So important we celebrated it with coloring • So important I’ll write it again • 1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 (avogadro’s #)
Mole + math = happy • If you have 3 dozen eggs… how many eggs is that? • If you have 48 shark teeth, how many dozen?
How did you do that???Why don’t you set up a fraction. It’ll last longer • 3 dozen eggs • 48 shark teeth
This is no different than the mole only different in your mind (like yoda) • 1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 (make into a fraction) • You have 2.9 moles of sodium. How many atoms? • I got 1.7 x 1024 atoms… yarp
More???? • You have 6.33 x 1027 atoms of sodium. How many moles? • I got 10,514.95 moles • Or…1.05 x 104 moles… yarp
More??? • Yep… an assignment of pure happy!!! • yarp
The mole part 2… Time to start the climb up the mountain…
So if you had a mole of… • How much of the planet would be covered.. • People…. • Pennies… • Atoms… • Let’s find out… to the balances… • yarp
Woa… • Atom mass (g) • Copper • Silicon • Zinc • aluminum
Soooo… a mole = … • So how many atoms does it take to have the mass # in grams of that atom = average atomic mass # in amu of the atom? • Answer = 1 mole • a mole is a way to scale up of atoms… • Makes life easier… • 1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 atoms or molecules • 1 mole = mass (g) on the p. table MOLE MASS • Yarp.
Mole mass • Element mole mass # pieces • silver • Sodium • Strontium
MOLE MASS Calcs. • Same math… different numbers. • If you have 11.2 grams of lithium, how many moles? • Did you get 1.61 moles? • Yarp…
O.K… another… • You have 0.0211 moles of calcium, how many grams? • Did you get 0.846 g??? • Yarp.
Yes sir, may I please have another • You have 2.77 x 1022 atoms of nickel, how many moles is that? • Did you get 0.046 moles??? Tricky.. • yarpy
One for the road… • Let us use the 0.046 moles of nickel found to figure out how many grams that is… • Did you get 2.7 grams?? • Sweet… yarp.
THE MOLE HILL!!!!Calculation happy!!! mole Atoms or molecules Mass (g)
Practice time!!!! • Work workwork • Yarpyarpyarp
