EA 5.2: Analysis Essay • Instructions + Outline • Rubric will be separate—do NOT lose! Needs to be stapled to front of completed essay on due date • Period 2: Wednesday, 5/28 • Periods 1, 4, 5, 7: Thursday, 5/29 • Late essays will be accepted until Sunday, June 1st at 9:00pm by email • I will check time stamp • Consequences of not turning in this essay: retake English 9, semester 2, in the online lab
Choosing a significant passage • First thing you will need to do today: • Identify a significant (important) passage in TKAM that identifies a coming of age experience—think about the different experiences the children have gone through, and how that could affect coming of age. • What about Scout putting herself into Boo’s shoes at the end? • What about the trial scene affecting Jem so much? What does he begin to understand? • What about Scout identifying herself as a lady after being so defiant? • Identify if this passage is using coming of age through a character, through the setting, or through the conflict • Do a close reading on this passage – Next slide
Close reading • Write down words you do not know; define them by writing your own definition based on the dictionary definition • Identify the characters involved, the setting of the passage, and the conflict. Next, identify which one is most prominent. Explain how the literary element is so important to the passage. • Explain how this passage is an example of coming of age. • Briefly write down a few sentences as to how you could show coming of age to somebody else in this passage. • Pick out two smaller quotes from the passage as a whole that help your argument that it is a coming of age passage
thesis • Construct a thesis statement by answering the following questions first: • What is Harper Lee (the author) trying to show the audience about coming of age? • Why is it important? • Turn both of these answers, as well as what you’ve determined from your close reading, into a one sentence statement.
