3 parts of a speech • Introduction – Grabs the attention of your audience • Body - begins with the main points of your speech, arrange them in logical order • Conclusion – summarizes the main points of your speech.
Types of Speeches • To inform • To persuade • To integrate • introductions • welcome speeches
Inform • Gives knowledge or information to the audience Persuade • Convinces people to believe or do something
Integrate • Pep talks, welcome speeches, introductions Prepared vs Extemporaneous • Prepared: is just that…you have time to prep • Extemporaneous: speech from little to no prep time.

How to write a speech • Brainstorm a list of topics • Choose topic that interests you, you are knowledgeable about or is of interest to your audience. • Gather information • Write your speech beginning with the body, then conclusion, then your introduction. • Write the speech the way you talk, not in outline or bullet format.
Delivery • Voice • pitch • quality • articulation • pronunciation • over pronounce each word • force • may the force be with you
Delivery • Stage presence • appearance • poise • attitude • always positive • confidence • but not over confident • personality • posture

Assignment • Construct and give a speech 2 – 3 minutes long to the class • Must be delivered with parts of speech included. • Will be graded by peers • Choose :Inform or Persuade • Inform - choose a state in the US and tell us about 10 plants that grow well in that state. • Persuade – choose a horticulture product company and persuade us to sell your product
Honors assignment • Choose a speech topic out of the bowl • You are given your audience/forum, who you are and your mission. • You are to individually prepare a 2-3 minute speech on the topic and present it to the class tomorrow. • You will be graded voice, stage presence, power of expression, response to questions, and general effect.
