Advantage: Cultural • Knowing / Identifying culturally with the largest population of non-Christians: Asia • Able to Contextualize the best from the West into the Eastern Context • Not exactly “Asian”, Not exactly “American”
Disadvantages: Cultural • Issue of Identity • Issue of Self-Loathing • More expectation of you speaking the local language
Advantage: Not White • No association with Imperialism/ Colonialism • Increasing Good Will from the global world toward Asians • Attract less unwanted attention – especially in East Asian Countries (Creative Access Nations)
Disadvantage: Not White • Attract less attention • Perception: Your English is not as good • The traditional North American missions agencies are still mostly white – lonely for Asian Americans
Asian American Missionary Confession “I am an Asian American, born and raised in the States, a child of immigrants. Growing up, my faith was deeply influenced by Western Christian thought, but always experienced in the context of immigrant churches. Ethnic identity, far from being ignored and irrelevant to my faith, was recognized and celebrated. Then I became a missionary. And my ethnicity that was once recognized and celebrated within the minority church now frequently left me feeling ignored and irrelevant within the predominantly white missions community….”
Advantage: Financial • The legacy resources of Asian American Immigrant Christians • Financial: Less Student Debt & more Financial freedom
Disadvantage: Model Minority • Expectation from family • Expectation from peers • The American Dream
Future for Asian American Missions • Increasing in number • Creative models: BAM • Grass-root, new mission agency formation with Asian American leadership • Emerging Asian American financial resources for missions
