Haciendas: Mexican ranches worked by indians/mestizos, owners converted workers to Roman Catholicism. Mestizos: Mixed Spanish and Indian blood. Eventually, Indian population reduced due to fighting & diseases brought by Spaniards due to Spanish colonization. 1520 – Spanish colonial period
Spain is in trouble because it’s occupied by Napoleon & French armies. Mexicans tired of Spanish rule. Miguel Hidalgo (priest) led an uprising giving his revolution speech in Dolores (town). Speech called for new government and began the war of independence (Mexican Independence day – September 15th–16th , 1810). Independence from Spain achieved in 1821. September 15, 1810 – el grito de Hidalgo
1823 – End of the Spanish Colonial Period. Santa Anna = Mexican general & later president. He led forces against Texans revolt @ the Alamo At the Alamo the Texans are defeated in 1836. 2 months later, the Texan army attacks the Mexicans & ends Mexican control. Republic of Texas is born – later the 28th state. Santa Anna & the Alamo - 1836
US defeats Mexico, takes everything north of the Rio Grande. Rio Grande becomes La Frontera between Mexico & USA. Mexico left with major national debt & disjointed army. Mexican/American war – 1846-1848
