NJROTC History The very first JROTC was started in 1911 by the Army. Navy JROTC began in 1966. GHS NJROTC was founded in 2003. Liberty Company first achieved Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors status on May 2011 and maintained the Distinguished Unit rating this year.
Our mission is to instill in the Georgetown High School Cadets the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.
NJROTC is a cadet driven organization supervised by Captain Gusman and Chief Bowman. All cadets have the opportunity to move up in ranks based on their attitude, commitment to the unit, and the quality of their work.
In the Classroom • Mondays and Tuesdays are multipurpose days. Cadets learn to drill, perform modified PT and follow up on academic assignments. • Wednesdays and Thursdays are uniform inspection and academic days where cadets learn Maritime History,Leadership,Citizenship, Nautical Sciences, Naval Knowledge and Skills and many other exciting topics. • Fridays are physical training (PT) days.
Uniforms • Cadet uniforms are issued out at no cost from the unit. However, cadets are held accountable for lost or damaged items. • Uniforms are worn once a week on either Wednesday or Thursday. • Cadets are inspected on those days and receive a test grade based on uniform appearance, military knowledge, grooming, and bearing.
Community Service, Summer Training and Social Activity • Cadets perform community service at the VFW, area parks, the Caring Place, and various other places in the community. • In the Summer, cadets compete to attend, Basic Leadership Training Camp, The NJROTC Leadership Academy, NJROTC STEM Camps at USD and Emery Riddle University, the MOWW Youth Leadership Conference, American Legion Boy’s State. • Cadet also take part in morale building events through out the year like the Fall Social and Military Ball.
Extracurricular Teams • There are seven cadet teams: Armed Drill, Unarmed Drill, Color Guard, Academic, Air Rifle, Physical Training, and Orienteering. • Teams compete at drill meets, postal contests and online competition against other high schools. • Participation in team activities requires a commitment outside of class time. • All cadets must comply with the school’s UIL qualification to compete and to be on a team.
Program Costs and Paperwork • $30 Fair Share fee. • Supports the program, teams, unit t-shirt, and minimizes the cost of certain events. • A current sports physical is required. • The Big Three: Standard Release form, a current physical, and a Health History form. • Please turn in all required paperwork and fees no later than 4 Sept 12.
NJROTC Benefits • Counts as a PE credit. • Cadets receive useful academic instruction in US history, nautical science, military protocol, citizenship, and leadership. • NJROTC teaches self- discipline, self-confidence, and the character development needed to help cadets successfully meet life’s challenges. • Cadets who choose to enter the military are eligible to enter at a higher pay grade. • It is FUN!
NJROTC Booster Club • Introduction of Booster Club President: Mrs. Peggy Stephens. • A great way for you to be involved in the unit. • We set up for different events such as organizing fundraisers, preparing for drill meets, and with the Fall Social. • The Booster Club meets once a month.
Maximizing the NJROTC Experience • Parent engagement is essential. • Accurate phone numbers and e-mails to facilitate timely communication. • Follow unit calendar and notices sent home. • Ensure cadets wear their uniform. • Return paperwork in a timely manner. • Monitor academic effort and performance. • Encourage responsible communications. • Hold cadets accountable. • Contact instructors in a timely manner with any questions or concerns.
