What is wave energy? • Wave energy is captured from surface waves from the ocean • or from pressure fluctuations that is located • beneath the surface. I chose this renewable resource because I believe it’s very hard to get rid of water. It always comes back no matter what and we know it’s going to be there unless we use all of it.
What materials? • One of many ways to get energy from waves works like a swimming pool wave machine in reverse. • In a swimming pool, air is blown in and out of a chamber beside the pool, which makes the water outside bob up and down, making waves. • At a wave power station, the waves arriving cause the water in the chamber to go up and down, which means that air is forced in and out of the hole in the top of the chamber. • We place a turbine in this hole, which is turned by the air rushing in and out. • The turbine turns a generator. • A problem with this design is that the rushing air can be very noisy, unless a silencer is fitted to the turbine.
Pros and Cons • Some pros is that wave energy never fails. The water is always moving, no matter what. • Cons is that we are nowhere near a large body of water. The closet one is Lake Havasu.
