Current WHO EQAP for detection of influenza A by PCR Strengths? • Only currently widely available Q/A WHO System. • Well organized. • Timely Weaknesses? • Timing could be improved to accommodate seasonality. Areas to improve? • Including an influenza virus that is not commonly recognized (H7 and H9). • Build in a challenge to the system (possibly including untypeables).

NCLE will participate in Piloting. Strengths and Weaknesses of the above programmes

Scope of EQAP: Needs to be expanded? • Virus culture NEAR TERM • Antivirals (phenotypic or genotypic) LONG TERM • Sequencing MID TERM • Serology LONG TERM • Others • Which labs/NICs are doing each of the above? NONE! • What methods? • If currently not doing, any plan in the mid-term or long term? • If offered, many NIC’swould be interested. • Priority of launching programme? TOP Priority – Virus Culture.
